Trends

Trends are always a tricky thing to navigate. Often couples book their wedding suppliers 12-24 months in advance so when trying to design their dream cake its hard to also predict the trend for the years ahead, especially when building a Pinterest board full of often dated content. However I also believe that if something appeals to the couple then it doesn’t really matter if it’s on trend or not, if you love it that’s all that matters. We view or work on the clients moodboard as well as talk about their likes and dislikes at our creative consultation in order to design for the individual couple this way together we can create a more unique cake not necessarily focusing on trends. Of course to some couples it’s important to have a hint of a trend but it’s important to not solely have this in mind when designing as possibly by the date of the wedding we’ll see that feature dated. That being said a trend can be an excellent starting point, or maybe an overall ‘vibe’ is a better guide. I’ll sometimes ask couples to explain the feeling that they’d like to create, be it boho warmth, rustic and laidback, contemporary formal elegance. All of these feelings can help to build a design and spark my ideas. Food, be it cake or something else, should create a feeling, ever heard of comfort food? And I feel the same about wedding cakes, gone are the days of one size fits all. I feel passionately about creating a feeling with your cake design, after all feelings evoke memories and that’s what’s so important on your wedding day, not trends.

I think the large amount of postponements due to Covid19 caused many couples to rethink their styles, sometimes due to a seasonal change of date and sometimes due to trend changes. This unfortunately is the case when a design is very trend focused. My advise to couples is to design for themselves and if wanting a very specific theme then it’s always best to keep an open mind to change closer to the wedding. Also once you love your moodboard STOP LOOKING on Pinterest! It’s so easy to ‘muddy’ your moodboard especially if you have 12 months plus to plan, when you’re happy stop.

Are you trend focused? Do you love a theme? I have to say a colour palette is always a good idea.
